Mumbai auto rickshaws can be helpful and be a pain at the same time. It's very easy to find a rickshaw in Mumbai but the problem is getting into it. Convincing the rickshaw driver to take you somewhere is worse than begging at times. There are some kind ones though who understand your problem and their duty but are overshadowed by the others. The best way to escape this problem is having a pretty girl along with you, because they don't say no to them (not always).
We as consumers are not supposed to ask them if they want to go somewhere or no because this is what the law says. But who in this country knows the law? I doubt the person who made the law still remembers it.
The most common excuses they would give are:
(1) Gas khatam ho gaya.
(2) Gaadi vapas karni hai, time ho gaya.
(3) Woh signal pe u turn nahi hai, hum nahi jaayega.
(4) Khaana khane ka time ho gaya.
At times these reasons might be true but they use it so often that it becomes hard to believe them.
Apart from this the other problem is the way they drive. Getting a license for a rickshaw i think is very easy. I don't know what the exact procedure is but looking at the way they drive i don't think they even give a proper test drive before getting a license. They cut the lanes as if they are driving on a freeway. During traffic hours they will block the side way for bikes. They think they are the Kings of the road, but this attitude helps the consumer at times. In a city like Mumbai where everyone wants to save time, this rash driving helps the consumer do that. They get you to your destination in time (might charge you extra for that).
The day Auto rickshaws go on strike, traffic disappears automatically. It maybe because they are large in number, but the most happiest people that day are the bikers. For a change they get to be the King and drive on a freeway. The strike becomes a pain for many others as the daily mode of public transport is stopped which ultimately puts pressure on the other modes of public transport. So no matter how much ever shit we talk about them, we won't stop travelling by rickshaws.
